Boards: We function, but are we really effective?

To consider current best practice relating to creating or refreshing preferred board (and senior committee) behaviours and competencies, demonstrating how this will increase shareholder value, impact and performance.

Consensus suggests that board effectiveness – especially decision-making capability and quality – makes a crucial contribution to the success of an organisation (and senior committees are included here too).

This leaders lunch event focuses on the ‘How’ of further developing your Board, and its senior committees, into effective decision making forums. It will also be an informative session for Chairmen and CEOs wishing to refresh or refine the effectiveness of their board.

The session leader, Jan Floyd-Douglass, uses the experiences and insights both from her senior leadership career and from working with various global clients to achieve greater board effectiveness. She will use real time case studies to provide the tools and short cuts that evidence best practice.

Top 5 challenges from recent case studies of board effectiveness include:

  1. Decision making at board level and in executive committees is poor, overladen with caveats and not timely
  2. The direction for delivering new, greater challenging goals is unclear or overly directive
  3. Regional management teams are ineffective and lack confidence resulting in low morale
  4. Board processes not fit for purpose
  5. Strong blame culture that inhibit challenge and debate
