The Future of Leadership: Reimagining the Workforce in an age of Robots

Wednesday 27th June 2018 - 12pm to 2pm

The global industrial landscape is shifting at such a rapid rate that leadership profiles relevant for ‘the new normal’ is difficult to determine. Just over the next crest lies a global economy that must accommodate disruptive technologies such as autonomous vehicles, accelerated machine learning that diagnose medical conditions and customer service algorithms that anticipate and fulfil customer needs.

New technologies that enable previously unimagined use of data for myriad emerging applications are challenging the way we conceive of the workplace. New leadership profiles are essential to successfully engage with a workforce augmented by robotics, artificial intelligence and machine learning.

Think new ways of creating value such as Robotics, work automation predictions, Bitcoin, Blockchain and Cloud disrupting traditional business models; think MP3 players & Camcorders being disrupted by the smartphone; UBER, AirBnB, Hyperloop and new ways of doing business, leveraging AI and Big Data.

The impact of the above has been rapid as it has been profound. It therefore follows that the role of the leader and the capabilities/experiences required have changed – and will continue to do so – at a rapid rate.

It has been suggested that 60% of occupations will have at least 30% of automated work activities in the next 15 years and14% of the global workforce will transition into new occupations; many of which that are yet to be defined.  The impact on how we organise and lead our businesses in such a period of disruption has been only part scrutinised.

Increasingly leaders must determine

  • How the ‘second machine age’ will impact on the way their organisations deliver value to shareholders
  • How disruption will be managed and how workforce capabilities will need to be remodelled for the workplace of the future

n a time of uncertainty and rampant disruptive innovation, leaders are central to identifying and responding to the fundamentally altered perceptions of service delivery, productivity growth, the notion of ‘value’ and the very nature of work itself.

In this session, Dr Terri Simpkin will highlight the emerging leadership challenges posed by the rapidly advancing advent of a highly automated global economy. In a session designed to generate discussion of the convergence of technology, people and leaders in practical terms, the conversation aims to interrogate the policy, organisational and human considerations of working in the ‘second machine age’.
